Church #58 - Our Lady of Częstochowa / Gabriel's Trumpet, Coventry

A friend and I drove here for daily Mass last Tuesday, which was quite an adventure because that was the morning when Rhode Island got an extreme, sudden thunderstorm that caused flooding and a bunch of people to lose power. We were very lucky; apart from some traffic lights that were knocked out in Cranston and Warwick, we had no problems getting there or back. We also survived all the other drivers trying to get through the light-free intersections without incident. Cranston and Warwick were the hardest hit towns, and it showed; there were leaves covering most of the roads and trees down everywhere.

The church had lost power, but of course Mass went on anyway. The daily Masses here are in a chapel in the rectory. There was no homily during the Mass, but we said the Creed. The priest also let us spend a long time in prayerful silence after receiving Communion, which I really enjoy.

There was a wedding getting out when I showed up at the main church to take pictures; I hope the bride and groom weren't too creeped out by the presence of a random guy with a camera. The parish also has an adoration chapel, which unfortunately wasn't open when I was there.

Lastly, there's an awesome Catholic store next to this parish that deserves a huge shout out. It's called Gabriel's Trumpet, and it's a totally volunteer-run fundraiser for St. Vincent de Paul. It has lots of different Catholic books, gifts and media, as well as an area where you can sit and get coffee. We're very lucky to have places like this in Rhode Island, and hopefully they're with us forever.
