Church #52 - St. Christopher, Tiverton

This was my first time ever being in Tiverton, not counting passing through on Route 24. I'm definitely excited to see more of the town in the future, after hearing so much about how beautiful it is. The doors and windows of the church were wide open thanks to the summer weather, so you could faintly smell the sea from inside the church. The predominant color inside the church is blue, thanks to the carpet and the paint in the altar area.

This church is part of a combined parish in Tiverton, along with St. Theresa. The parish is having a pretty epic weekend-long feast as we speak, with tons of sponsors and events. The old parish (and apparently all the parishes in Tiverton) used to be run by an order called the Holy Ghost fathers, but they had to withdraw, presumably because of numbers.

St. Christopher was martyred by the Roman empire in the 3rd century. He wasn't widely venerated in the Church until hundreds of years after his death, and there's a lot of ambiguity surrounding him as a historical figure. He is the patron Saint of travelers, which might explain why a parishioner from a Navy family raved to me about how welcoming they found the parish community when they first moved to Rhode Island.

The world's smallest cry room

This statue of Mary really struck me. The discoloration on her face makes it look like she's crying.
