Church #40 - St. Joseph, Woonsocket

I was supposed to go here last week for a 7:30 Mass with my Mom, but I was so late that I missed the Mass completely. I made up for it yesterday. For reasons that I can't entirely articulate, I thought it looked a lot more like a mainline Protestant church than a Catholic church from the outside. Of course, it's not what's on the outside that counts, and I knew I was in the right place after seeing a shield with "Maria Spes Nostra" above the door. When I got inside the Mass had already started, even though it was exactly 7:30.

My favorite part of the priest's homily was his discussion of the apostles Simon the Zealot and Matthew the tax collector - more or less mortal enemies on a cultural level, but brought together by Jesus. It reminded me of a book I'm currently reading, called "Tattoos on the Heart", written by a Jesuit priest who's spent his life working with gang members in LA. I also thought it was hilarious when I got cut in the communion line - an old lady went zooming past me without looking at or acknowledging me. The congregation sang "Immaculate Mary" at the end of Mass, and a bunch of people stayed to pray a rosary.

This stuff looks like it's for sale, but I could have easily taken whatever I wanted. I wonder if it's meant to be sold after the Sunday Masses?
